When teaching students about summarizing text, I use graphic organizers to help students “organize” their thinking. Expository text is organized by the topic, then main idea and key details. Literary text on the other hand, is organized by plot. Therefore, when working on summarizing it is just as important for students to understand text structure as it is for them to understand summarizing.
